Continuing a theme, we're looking at how communities along the Miami Valley Trails are building connections to/from the trails to better connect their neighborhoods, parks, amenities, and destinations.
This fall, the City of Dayton completed a new spur off the Great Miami River Trail north of Island MetroPark into Triangle Park and right to the entrance to the new Triangle Park Dog Park. This path, just under 0.3 miles, winds a little uphill as it goes deeper into the park. It passes several existing, replacement or new picnic shelters, with ADA accessibility from the path. The path is asphalt paved and consistently 10 feet wide, so it feels like a continuation of the Great Miami River Trail. Triangle Park is full of huge, beautiful trees, and will be a wonderful, shady stopping point for summertime rides on the GMR Trail.
Also, with this connection in place, the parking lot for the Dog Park now serves as an excellent access point for the Miami Valley Trails.
Triangle Park's "new" dog park opened in 2022, as the relocation spot for the former Deed's Point Dog Park. (Some people still call this the "Deed's Point Dog Park.") The park has a large dog area and a separate small dog area. There is a shelter in the park, a walking path loop, and plenty of seating options for humans. Like the rest of Triangle Park, the dog park has a lot of big trees and wonderful shade.
Triangle Park also has a unique place in American sports history: it was the site of the very first game in the National Football League (NFL) on October 3, 1920. The Dayton Triangles defeated the Columbus Panhandles 14-0.
Drop into Triangle Park the next time you are on the GMR Trail in Dayton.
